How To Start Your Personal Brand

Personal branding is the process of developing a "mark" that is created around your name or your career. You use this "mark" to express and communicate your skills, personality, and values.  Think of it as more of a “Professional Reputation”. Much like large companies have an image you think of when you hear their names, this should have the same effect to people when they hear yours.

Why Personal Brands Are for Everyone

Personal brands should be important to everyone. Personal brands are not only for the entrepreneur that owns their own business, but for everyone trying to grow their career.  This could be everyone, from an executive in a law firm, to a musician...anyone that needs to have their name out in the public eye needs to think about their personal brand.

If you don’t develop your own personal brand, others will do it for you. Developing your personal brand is the proactive way of controlling your career development and how you are perceived in the marketplace. This also means that if you get a negative “reputation”, you will need to work extra hard to correct your brand.

A strong personal brand will impact your ability to get the promotion, find new clients, reach new sales, and improve word of mouth marketing.

Build Your Platform

Having something as simple as a social media platform is enough for you to start building your brand.  Sites like Facebook and Instagram are constantly reviewed to find more information about an individual or a company.  Linkedin is a specific social media platform designed for professionals to network. Having a strong presence here is a great way to build your brand.

Be Yourself

Find your own style. You don’t have to do what everyone else is doing and just follow the crowd. Use your style and uniqueness to attract the jobs and clientele that you desire. People are much more receptive to others that are honest and relaxed.  Presenting yourself in a natural manner will go a long way in creating new relationships. On the other hand, people have a keen sense of telling if someone is being “fake”. So just be yourself and work towards having your brand seen by those that will appreciate it.

Set Your Goals

It’s important to have a clear picture of your personal and professional goals, both short and long-term. This will help you identify the most important things to spend your time on. This is not only a great point for building a brand, but in life in general.

Craft Your Personal Brand Persona

When people hear your name, what will the first thing they think of be?  There's a few ways to help control this:

What are your personality features? This can be as easy as saying you have a crazy sense of humor or that you are a hard working perfectionist. Take a few moments...why do you think people are attracted to the brand of you?

Describing yourself. When it comes to your brand who are you and why do people enjoy working with you?  Are you friendly? Do you like to talk? Are you a quiet and shy?

Identifying your specialty. What do you do and what do people want you to do for them?  This is your opportunity to shine and show off what you can do to help others. What are your strengths?  What do you focus on? What do you want the biggest detail about you to be that others think about when they hear your name?

Building a personal brand takes time and effort, but it’s worth it. The need for a personal brand is only increasing. It  can follow you throughout your career, it’s a leadership requirement that lets people know who you are and what you stand for, and it’s a great way to stand as in individual, to stand apart and above the rest of your competition.
